३८. हिंदुओं के प्रसिद्ध देवता जो सृष्टि का संहार करनेवाले और पौराणिक त्रिमूर्ति के अंतिम देवता कहे गए हैं । विशेष—वैदिक काल में यही रूद्र के रूप में पूजे जाते थे । पर पौराणिक काल में ये शंकर, महादेव और शिव आदि नामों से प्रसिद्ध हुए । पुराणानुसार इनका रूप इस प्रकार है,— इनके सिर पर गंगा, माथे पर चंद्रमा तथा एक और तीसरा नेत्र, गले मे साँप तथा नरमुंड की माला, सारे शरीर में भस्म, व्याघ्रचर्म ओढ़े हुए और बाएँ अंग में अपनी स्त्री पार्वती को लिए हुए । इनके पुत्र गणेश तथा कार्तिकेय, गण भूत और प्रेत, प्रधान अस्त्र त्रिशूल और वाहन बैल है जो नंदी कहलाता है । इनके घनुष का नाम पिनाक है जिसे धारण करने के कारण ये पिनाकी कहे जाते हैं । इनके पास पाशुपत नामक एक प्रसिद्ध अस्त्र था जो उन्होने अर्जुन को उसकी तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर दे दिया था । पुराणों में इनके संबंध में बहुत सी कथाएँ हैं । ये कामदेव का दहन करनेवाले और दक्ष का यज्ञ नष्ट करनेवाले माने जाते हैं । कहते हैं, समुद्रमंथन के समय जो विष निकला था, वह इन्होंने पान किया था । वह विष इन्होंने अपने गले में ही रखा और नीचे पेट में नहीं उतारा, इसलिये इनका गला नीला हो गया और ये नीलकंठ कहलाने लगे । परशुराम ने अस्त्रविद्या की शिक्षा इन्हीं से पाई थी । संगीत और नृत्य के भी ये प्रधान आचार्य और परम तपस्वी तथा योगी माने जाते हैं । इनके नाम से एक पुराण भी है जो शिवपुराण कहलाता है । इनके उपासक 'शैव' कहलाते हैं । इनका निवासस्थान कैलास माना जाता है और लोक में इनके लिंग का पूजन होता है । पर्या॰—शंभु । महादेव । ईश्वर । ईश । खंडपरशु । ऊर्ध्वरेता । ईशान । पंचानन । शिपिविष्ट । अर्धनारीश । भर्ग । विश्वनाथ । गिरीश । मृत्युंजय । त्रिलोचन । हर । भैरव । उमापति । भूतनाथ । काशीनाथ । नंदीश्वर । रुद्र । महाकाल । वासुदेव । जटाधर । पशुपति । पुरुष । कृत्तिवासा । पिनाकी । धूर्जटि । नीललोहित । उग्र । कपर्दी । श्रीकंठ । शितिकंठ । शूली ।
